Have you detected digging in your lawn, mulch or landscaping that occurs at night and you are unsure of what did it?
It could very well be an Armadillo! These prehistoric looking animals are slowly migrating North and claiming new territory. A lack of predators is contributing to this migration. The word armadillo in Spanish means “little armored one”.
Armadillos do not fare well in colder climates and have to adapt to them. The Nine-Banded armadillo prefers to den near creeks and streams in soft soils that make easier digging and food is more prolific.
Armadillos normally have 4 young after a gestation of 2-3 months. Crossing a stream is possible if armadillos swallow a large amount of air before they cross the stream. Otherwise they will sink due to their weight.
